Reserves

Our Mimi is one busy girl. On May 10th we celebrated our one year anniversary as a forever family with massive quantities of food, good times with our travel group and lots of gifts.

June 5th brought Mimi’s second birthday and we celebrated with more quantities of food and a special gift from Mama, Daddy and Sis. We went to Build A Bear and Mimi, fan of all things furry, selected her new buddy and participated in bringing him to life. Big Fun. Bears, as he is now lovingly called, is made extra super special by the addition of a sound implant that can be played at will. When his left hand is squeezed, he repeats, “Wo men ai Mimi!” in a sing song tone recorded by Mark, Julia and myself. We’re pretty sure we are saying, “We love you, Mimi” but due to the difficult nature of the tones in Mandarin, there is a slight possibility we are saying, “We hurt you, Mimi” instead. I mean we really worked on that pesky third tone but I’ve never had an ear for languages and Mark and Julia were following my lead based on class notes from a very basic Mandarin class taken over a year ago. You can see why the lack of confidence. As Mimi does not yet know Mandarin, however, she goes through life unthreatened by the possible menacing message issuing forth from her beloved Bears. She truly loves her new friend and thoroughly enjoys cuddling and co-sleeping with him during quiet times and trying to shove his bulbous feet into flip-flops the rest of the day.

Today we had Mimi’s 2 year physical and we are overjoyed to report that she continues to grow at an astounding pace. Our ped printed out the history of her growth and in one year’s time she has gone from .45%ile in weight (that’s right…not even on the charts!) to the 23.89th %ile. In height she has gone from the 9.68th %ile to (drum roll please!) the 58.32 %ile. No wonder she gets crabby from time to time. All that growth must be plum tuckering her out!

Lucky Mimi appears to be a svelte girl by nature but a Mama likes to see a little chub on her baby’s thighs at this age. Toddlers need some reserves, for heaven’s sake! Now that Mimi has firmly established herself on those growth charts, we can probably relax a bit the butter, whole milk and ice cream diet we’ve been feeding her.

Drats, I’ve really been enjoying those leftovers!
